Berwick Railway Bridge

The Quayside is only three minutes walk from the apartment and here you can watch the Salmon net fishing on the Tweed. The fishing season starts on 1st of June until 14th of September. At low tide you can take a seat and watch the salmon fishermen casting their nets or ” rowing a shot from Gardo’s Batt” the mid-stream sand bar. Rod fishing for Salmon and Sea Trout on the River Tweed is very popular and permits can be obtained from www.fishtweed.co.uk The Berwick Bridge or Old Bridge 1634 is the sixth structure to be built on this site, the foundations made from bales of wool. The New Bridge, a world record holder when constructed in 1925 boasting the longest concrete span at 361 feet to carry the A1 across the River Tweed . The Royal Border Bridge being the railway link between England and Scotland. Facing the river along the Wall’s there are some remarkable Georgian buildings architecture which are mainly private house’s today. Berwick upon Tweed is also famed for its swannery, which is the second largest in the country and numbers are in excess of 320 in the herd

Local Amenities

There is a variety of Shops, pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance from our Berwick holiday rental including some that provide local fresh produce and you can visit the twice weekly market held on Saturdays and Wednesdays in the shadow of the Town Hall, where a bargain might be had.

Main Local Attractions

With comparatively little road traffic you are within easy drive of all the local attractions and castles on both side of the border. Day trips out can include Kelso’s cobbled streets and Floors Castle the largest inhibited castle in Scotland.

A splendid day out where you will find over 4,000 plant varieties including a 350 Japanese cherry tree orchard which is the largest in the world, 600,000 pink tulips and a rose garden with the scent of 3,000 David Austin roses. Where else would you find a Poison garden, a bamboo labyrinth and Serpent Garden with hidden water features. It also has one of the largest tree house in the world that includes a first class restaurant with thousands of twinkling lights, living green leaves and a real log fire.

For a full day out why not check out the tide table we provide in the apartment then take 30 minutes to drive South 26 miles down to Seahouses fishing village and harbour. For the more adventures a boat trip to The Farne Islands with their bird’s and Seal sanctuary’s can be taken from here. On the way back visit the massive and very impressive Bamburgh Castle and closer to home The Holy Island of Lindisfarne with its castle and priory. You will be ready to put your feet up after all that.
